ExerGo’s CO₂ heating and cooling network
ExerGo is a technology provider and a project developer of innovative solutions for the implementation of sustainable CO₂-based heating and cooling networks. Our thermal networks enable the provision of efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly heating and cooling services to cities and communities around the world.
By using local resources such as lakes, rivers, oceans, geothermal energy, or waste heat, ExerGo’s thermal networks distribute energy optimally through the use of closed-loop CO₂, a natural fluid with exceptional thermal performance.
The unique properties of CO₂ enable the design of compact networks that are ideal for all implementations where the compactness and flexibility of the infrastructure make a difference in terms of efficiency and investment. This approach significantly reduces construction costs and lead times, while facilitating integration into the existing environment. It enables local authorities, public services and private and public companies to accelerate the decarbonisation of heating and cooling in buildings.
The ExerGo solution is compatible with standard HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and can easily be integrated with renewable or recovered heat sources, such as industrial or urban waste heat. The CO₂ network functions as a smart thermal network, capable of balancing energy supply and demand between different users in real time, throughout the year.
How does a CO2 thermal network work?
Comprising a two-pipe system, liquid and vapour CO₂ circulates in both directions, optimising energy supply and demand between users, suppliers and the environment in different climate zones. Compatible with standard heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, such as heat pumps, heat exchangers, decentralised heat pumps or refrigeration units, our network supplies energy to interconnected buildings using the phase change of CO₂. By recovering residual energy, the system allows you to benefit from synergies between heating and cooling needs, promoting the circular economy and accelerating the energy transition.
Why choose CO₂ over water?
CO₂ is an excellent low-temperature thermal energy carrier. The phase change of CO₂ absorbs or releases up to 10 times more energy than heating/cooling water in a temperate loop. This allows for smaller, more flexible and lighter piping infrastructure, reducing investment costs and improving operating costs.
